I was in my friend’s place when I first came across the book Body Language by Julius Fast. I was quite interested in the idea of the book where it was demonstrated how people can understand what is going on inside other people’s mind only by looking at the person or to be precise by looking at some specific gestures. The use of body language is very useful in enhancing the communication skills of the modern corporate employee and it is important that people know about the key aspects of non-verbal communication.

Proper eye contact- While you are meeting different people there should always be a proper eye contact between them. If there is too little interest it means you are taking little interest in the work. If you make too much eye contact that it would probably mean sexual interest or unnecessary aggression. Striking a balance is very difficult however you should try to keep it in between the two extremes.

Personal Space- Do not try to stand too close to people as you would be invading their personal space. You can imagine that they have an invisible sphere around them with a 20 inches diameter and you are never to breach that distance. People do not like their personal space to be invaded except in case of intimate people, so it is an issue that you will not want to mess with.

Smile- It costs nothing however it works wonders to build good rapport between two people. Smile at everyone, even when you meet someone for the first time. It does not take much of an effort to smile, yet we do not see many people smile when they are interacting for the first time. There are many situations where you may not feel easy and feel quite stressed out. In that situations a smile may ease out the situation and create a lighter atmosphere. This is a small effort that can bring you guaranteed results.

Nod your head- This is an action that can bring is a lot of positive results. It brings in a feel of affirmation or agreement. Without uttering a single word, you are telling that person that you like him and are agreeing to what he is saying. Do not move your head like a horse or other animals. It is just an occasional nod of your head that will send the speaker the desired message and bring in the good results. It will definitely help you to build positive rapport a lot easily.

Never touch your nose while you are talking. When you touch any part of your face while you are talking, it is a clear signal that you are not honest and may be hiding something. Well sometimes these things may be unavoidable, but in the general you should avoid touching your ears, nose or your face while you are talking.

When you are talking to a person you are constantly studying the person about what he is thinking. You are analyzing the body language of that person. So the best option will be to adopt the similar body language. This will help the other person to open up a lot more and a positive rapport will be built.

Global broadband subscribers reach 370 millionIPTV subscribers pass 15 million

Hong Kong, 14 July 2008 – The Broadband Forum, formerly the DSL Forum, has today announced the latest Broadband and IPTV statistics at this year’s Broadband World Forum Asia in Hong Kong. The report, prepared for the Broadband Forum by industry analysts Point Topic, shows that IPTV subscribers have more than doubled for the second year running with an increase of 53.14 percent in the 12 months to 31 March 2008.

The statistics also show that worldwide broadband subscribers have reached over 370 million with DSL remaining the most dominant access technology with 65 percent of the world’s subscribers. However, fiber subscriptions have risen by 33 percent since the beginning of 2007, with over 10 million people connected to a fiber network. This increase in fiber subscriptions may be attributed to the increased popularity of bandwidth hungry services such as IPTV. However, the leading technology delivering IPTV today is ADSL2plus, with 12,049,817 subscribers.

Nearly 15.5 million people are now subscribed to an IPTV service, with Europe having over 8.4 million subscribers, making it the strongest market in terms of growth and total subscriber numbers.

“IPTV operators around the world have shown that systems are scalable and can handle rapid growth in subscriber numbers,” said Point Topic Senior Analyst John Bosnell. “However, developing and agreeing standards will help these operators deliver IPTV more simply and effectively over a variety of access technologies and help to drive higher up take in other markets.”

DSL Dominates

DSL continues to be the most popular access technology with close to 240 million of the world’s subscribers. Cable subscriptions rates have slowed to 18 percent growth rate, while subscribers on FTTx rose 33 percent in the last year.

This increase in fiber subscribers is echoed in the current work of the Broadband Forum, which has expanded its remit over the past few years well beyond its DSL roots; first issuing access agnostic management specifications and most recently developing specifications to incorporate fiber into the standard architecture and management framework of providers. Most recently the Forum released Technical Report (TR)-142, “Framework for TR-069 enabled PON and fiber related devices”. Building on its existing TR-069, TR-142 enables vendors and service providers to remotely configure, troubleshoot and manage a Passive Optical Network (PON) – an important consideration as vendors and service providers worldwide look to maximise revenues, lower management complexities, minimise truck roll and introduce new revenue generating services.

The aim is also to enable fiber networks to work side by side with existing infrastructures – and with 370 million broadband subscribers in the world using a variety of access technologies, this is imperative to the success of fiber and others that they share common standards wherever possible.Snapshot of Regional Broadband Growth to 31st March 2008
